Landline, Wireless, and Data Services Down for Many in Southeastern US

An issue at a local provider impacted landline and data services in a handful of southeastern U.S. states with customers reporting outages across all the four major carriers. In accordance to Re/code, a problem that was first identified on AT&T’s network is now affecting Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint, affecting an unknown number of subscribers which were temporarily without any service.

Though the exact problem couldn’t be detected, both Sprint and Verizon have traced the problem back to the local exchange provider, confirming multiple carriers were experiencing data and voice services outages within the region. According to a report, Kentucky and Tennessee are the hardest hit states.

A Sprint representative announced, “We are aware of the impact to service in which customers across multiple carriers may be unable to access voice and some data services.” He also said, “This appears to be an issue caused by a local exchange provider and our network team is working with the provider to restore services to impacted customers as quickly as possible.”

A representative of Verizon followed up by adding that it is currently working with the unnamed provider to restore service, but can’t estimate when the services will be fully restored.

Sources also informed Re/code that the AT&T landline network should be blamed for the ongoing outrage as all the other telecoms rely on AT&T’s backbone to transport data. Answering the same, a company representative said that AT&T is “investigating the cause and working as quickly as possible to restore service.”
